Camping & Lodge Safaries / Tour Description

Pachypodium

This combination of a camping and lodge safari has been specifically compiled for desert lovers. The initial hostility of our destination soon turns out to be one of the most interesting and impressive travel destinations in southern Africa.

The first day and stage of the tour ends with a spectacular view of the highest dunes in the world. Discover the magic of Sossusvlei – an unforgettable experience. With every glance of this breathtaking panorama our sense of superiority fades and a look at the starry sky in the evening convinces of our humble position in the universal empire.

Even in this arid landscape some people can and have to make a living. A visit to a sheepfarm soon makes one realize how much devotion towards ones country and love for nature and an extensive amount of idealism is necessary to live within and off this environment.

The coastal town Lüderitzbucht with its historic buildings including the Felsenkirche (Evangelical Lutheran Church) and the ghost town Kolmanskop bear proof of previous 'golden' times. Here everything began. Colonialism, diamond fever and stories of lush grazing and immeasurable wildlife made many an adventurer give up his roots to seek his fortune here. Travelling on the tracks of Adolf Lüderitz inevitably leads to the questions what these adventurers must have thought when they first set eyes on the land of their dreams.

Diamonds are still mined in the vicinity of Lüderitzbucht but one no longer has to put up without modern amenities. The blend of past and present is perceptible all over. Deserted beaches stand in stark contrast to the popular and picturesque harbour, and a visit to Diaz Point, the Stormvogelbucht, Pomona and the Bogenfels should not be missed. Seafood lovers will be enticed by delicacies, as the Lüderitz oysters and lobsters are renowned all around the globe.

After our visit to this desolate and seemingly barren region the Orange River and the surrounding vineyards and fields seem out of place. This river forms the border between Namibia and South Africa and part of the Richtersveld, an area which can be regarded as the frontier between summer and winter rain regions. The vegetation has adapted well to the prevailing weather conditions and will thrill every botanist, as the ‘halfmens’ Pachypodium namaquanum and other rare endemic plants grow here. The combination of extreme solitude, unusual vegetation and a breathtaking panorama guarantee this to be the ultimate desert experience.

The Fish River Canyon bears proof of a million-year-old geological history. The warm anabatic winds at the edge of the canyon will wipe away your trivial worries - rather philosophise about the sense of living while enjoying a sundowner and an unrivalled vista.
