A glimpse of history:
Charly became a legend in South West Africa, people named him "Charly the desert fox". One fine day he sold the donkey car and bought his very first Landrover. His knowledge about the Namib was remarkable, he knew almost everything about minerals, fauna and flora.
He was a tall man with blistering blue eyes and a gentle nature, so people loved to experience the desert with him. He built up the company which was first called Charly's Atlantic Tours and is up to now "The Godfather" of Charly's Desert Tours. He has always been a role model for all our guides who take clients into the desert. Charly sadly passed away in August 1984 but his philosophy lives on in us.
Charly's Atlantic Tours 1966 & the legend Charly Gürtel

The legend Charly Gürtel
Charly Guertel was born in South West Africa (nowadays Namibia) in 1911. Looking for work, he walked the Namib Desert for 500 km and more throughout the years, since he couldn't afford any other transport. Some farmers offered him a meal and gave him a place to sleep, so he experienced hard times. But all the lonely kilometres he walked through the Namib Desert had an unforeseen advantage: he got to know the desert like no other person. His first own transport was a donkey car with rubber tyres and water tanks which he built himself.Charly became a legend in South West Africa, people named him "Charly the desert fox".
